Salaries
Disclaimer
In the following, we give a short explanation about the salaries at German universities for PhD students and postdocs. This is for orientation only, and does not constitute any guarantee. Our research group has no influence on the salaries, they follow automatically from government regulations.
Salary classes
Salaries are computed according to a salary class. PhD students are paid according to salary class E13, and postdocs are usually paid E13, sometimes E14 (in case of special additional responsibilities). (Professors, and administrative personnel have other salary classes.)
The net salary in E13 depends on various factors, mostly your family situation and the length of your job experience. (PhD students start with experience level 1.)
Calculating this yourself can be tricky. The following inofficial calculator can give some insights:
- Calculation for unmarried person without children, experience level 1
- Unfortunately only in German.
- The monthly salary before taxes is “Monats-Brutto”.
- The monthly salary after taxes is “netto bleiben” in the same row.
- If the link doesn’t work anymore, or if the results don’t mention the right year in the title, please let us know.
- For higher experience levels, see the table on the bottom, and click a number 1…6. (Level 2 after one year, level 3 after three years, level 4 after six years, …)

Part-time positions
Most positions in the computer science department are 100% positions unless explicitly said/negotiated otherwise.
Health insurance etc.
Positions include mandatory health insurance, pension contributions, etc. The “monthly salary after taxes” already reflects those costs, so no need to pay for health insurance in addition.
